Tank 300 4x4 gets a turbo plug-in hybrid engine

Back in January, we managed to get an early peek at GWM's upcoming Tank 330. Compared to the Tank 300 which comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that makes 220 PS with 380 nm of torque, the Tank 330 gets a stonking 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 that churns out 355 PS and 500 Nm of pull.

With a V6 engine now available for the 4x4 SUV, it looks like GWM wants to take on the likes of the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. But GWM is not yet done offering more engines to the Tank 300.

This is the Tank 300 Hi4-T PHEV, and it's the plug-in hybrid version of the go-anywhere 4x4. Revealed ahead of its launch by the PRC's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), it combines turbocharged performance with the eco-friendliness of an electric powertrain.

While the exterior looks the same as any Tank 300, the Hi4-T PHEV comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that's assisted by an electric motor and a 37.1 kWh ternary lithium battery pack. The result is a total system output of 244 PS which is 24 PS more than the regular 2.0-liter turbo. Its torque rating was not revealed although since the powertrain seems to have been derived from the Tank 500 PHEV, this one may come with a similar 750 Nm of pull.

Power is likely sent to a 9-speed automatic hybrid transmission along with a 4WD system with front & rear locking differentials. With a fully-charged battery, the Tank 300 Hi4-T PHEV has a claimed traveling distance of around 105 km based on the CLTC cycle.

While it's nice that GWM has come up with a plug-in hybrid version of the Tank 300, the PHEV packs a lot more weight. In fact, it has a curb weight of 2645 kg – a significant increase over the non-hybrid 2.0-liter turbo version that only weighs in at 2165 kg.

The PHEV version of the Tank 300 is expected to go on sale later this year in the PRC. As for the possibility of the PHEV variant to make its way here, that is still up in the air at the moment. After all, GWM Philippines has just launched the Tank 300 not too long ago.
