Tamaraw: Will Toyota offer 5-door wagon version?

Toyota has marked an important milestone with the launch of the new Tamaraw. Not only have they successfully revived an iconic model, but it also signals the brand’s push into the commercial vehicle segment.

After rolling out the new Tamaraw as a single cab model with long and short wheelbase versions, the versatility of the IMV-0 platform leaves us curious about the next step of Toyota with its returning icon.

At the press conference of the next generation Tamaraw launch, we asked Toyota executives if a wagon/MPV version similar to the Tamaraw FX of the 90s would also be done to the new Tamaraw.

Jurachart Jongusuk, Regional Executive Chief Engineer of Toyota Motor Asia has confirmed they are now working on the next variation of the Tamaraw. But of course, the executive did not give away specifics as to which body style they were working on.

However, the chief engineer was quick to note that the Tamaraw FX 5-door AUV was indeed very popular during its time in the Philippines and said that a “similar kind” will be made in the future. That is perhaps the closest confirmation we can get in the meantime as Toyota continues to develop the Tamaraw to meet customer needs.

Masando Hashimoto, TMP President, also reiterated that the Tamaraw model range will be responsive to the needs of customers. If there is demand, they will offer it.

Our closest look at that new 5-door version could be the Hilux Rangga SUV Concept that was shown in Indonesia a few months ago. It was reconfigured to accommodate an extra pair of doors, a tailgate, and additional seats inside for seven passengers.

While the original Tamaraw was introduced in the Philippine market with side-facing seats, it’s the 90s-era Tamaraw FX wagon version that Filipino families fondly remember the most. It’s the model that evolved into the Revo, and in a way, helped influence the birth of the Innova nameplate.

TMP hasn’t said anything about timelines yet with this 5-door version, but it’s a nice hint that there’s more to come for the new Tamaraw.
