LOOK: All-new BMW X5 to get Neue Klasse look

Believe it or not, the current generation X5 (codenamed G05) has been with us since 2018. While it has received extensive updates here and there (including a new plug-in hybrid version), father time remains undefeated as the current X5 is due for a full model change.

While BMW is pouring most of its attention on the upcoming iX3, that doesn't mean the German automaker is not giving the next-generation X5 some attention. In fact, our spy photographers managed to spot the all-new BMW X5, albeit covered in camouflage.

Despite the automaker's best efforts to hide what the all-new X5 will look like, it's quite obvious the next-generation model will feature the brand's “Neue Klasse X” design philosophy. First seen on the camouflaged images of the all-new iX3, the exterior makeover is quite the departure compared to BMW's current design language.

For starters, the front fascia features a sleek new look, although we won't be surprised if the production version will get the brand's signature dual kidney grille. The LED headlights appear to have a Cyberpunk-inspired design, but since it's still a prototype, there could still be changes applied. Also worth mentioning is the X5's more wagon-like appearance. While it still has the proportions of an SUV, it's hard to ignore the longer rear end, as well as the longer quarter panels & windows.

The LED taillights are still shrouded, but more than likely the units currently installed are for the sake of the prototype. Last but not least is the tailgate, which appears to have been redesigned from the ground up to conform with the Neue Klasse X design makeover.

We also got a chance to take a peek inside the all-new X5's cabin. Like the exterior, BMW is not yet ready to show everything inside the next-gen X5. Despite the black cloth almost covering everything, elements from the upcoming Operating System X can be seen. Immediately seen is the new digital instrument cluster that sits below the windshield and spans the entire width. The result is a more futuristic and sleeker design that's a departure from the current look.

There's also a central touchscreen infotainment system, although it looks to be a prototype of sorts as it doesn't conform to the Neue Klasse X design language. Perhaps BMW is still ironing out the final look and has yet to apply the official design that will be used inside the all-new X5.

Like the G05 X5, the all-new model is expected to be available with various powertrains including mild-hybrid gasoline & diesel engines, turbo plug-in hybrids, and fire-breathing M versions. However, a fully-electric version is expected to be offered in the future, including a range-extended EV (REEV), although there are no details yet about the rumored REEV and EV.

Since the all-new BMW iX3 will be revealed first, perhaps we're still quite a long way before BMW reveals “official” camouflaged photos of the next-generation X5. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed the prototype will look similar to the production version once it's unveiled.
