EDSA Kamuning Flyover to be partially closed starting April 25

Around two years ago, the EDSA Kamuning Flyover (AKA EDSA Timog Flyover) was temporarily closed to traffic after the Department of Public Works & Highways (DPWH) conducted immediate repairs on the key infrastructure. From sealing cracks in the structure itself as well as repairing large potholes, the DPWH had its work cut out for them.

The temporary closure resulted in traffic buildup in the area along the southbound and northbound directions. After a month, the repairs were completed and traffic flow once again normalized. Unfortunately for EDSA motorists who frequently take the flyover, a portion of the infrastructure will once again be partially closed to the public.

In a recent announcement, the DPWH said that the southbound side of the aforementioned flyover will be partially closed to traffic beginning on April 25, 2024. For 11 months, the southbound portion of the infrastructure will be strengthened to prepare it for a massive earthquake that could strike the West Valley Fault in Metro Manila dubbed “The Big One”.

The retrofitting of the said flyover will begin from the outermost lane going towards the dedicated EDSA Busway lane. However, the MMDA and DPWH said that the operations of the EDSA Busway will not be affected by the construction work. As for the project itself, it will be split into four phases with each one set to last for about 12 weeks. It will see certain portions of the southbound section of the flyover to be demolished and reconstructed.

With the southbound direction of the EDSA Kamuning Flyover set to be closed to traffic in the coming weeks, motorists are advised to brace for heavy traffic in the area and look for alternate routes while the project is being conducted.
