e-Motion: Is Mitsubishi getting Nissan e-Power for Xpander?
Both electrified Mitsubishi MPVs will debut in Thailand on February 1

Yes, you read that headline correctly. Mitsubishi is set to offer more hybrid vehicles soon, and the Xpander (and Xpander Cross) will both benefit from an electrified powertrain. Dubbed by Mitsubishi Motors Thailand as the Xpander HEV and Xpander Cross HEV, both vehicles are set to be launched in The Land of Smiles on February 1, 2024.

At the time of writing, Mitsubishi has yet to reveal exact specifications or details about the two hybrid MPVs. However, the automaker has confirmed as early as 2021 (and again mentioned last year) that they are developing hybrid versions of the Xpander and Xpander Cross. Initially, we thought the MPV would get a 48V mild-hybrid system to complement the 1.5-liter engine.

However, we did notice that Mitsubishi used the name “e-Motion” to describe the Xpander HEV and Xpander Cross. Given that Mitsubishi is part of the Alliance with Nissan and Renault, the e-Motion name somehow reminds us of e-Power by Nissan. This makes us speculate that the Xpander HEV and Xpander Cross HEV could come with Nissan's e-Power hybrid system.

With the technology already being in other Nissan vehicles like the Kicks, Sylphy, X-Trail, and Serena, perhaps Mitsubishi thought it would be better to borrow that technology for their popular MPV. Not only will it be more fuel efficient for the MPVs, but the e-Power system may also deliver better driving dynamics and EV-like acceleration.
With the official launch set for next week, we'll be keeping a close eye on possible leaks and new information about the Xpander HEV and Xpander Cross HEV.
