Confirmed: 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander to get a hybrid

Mitsubishi isn't focused just on the all-new Strada/Triton and Montero Sport, which are coming in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Aside from developing the next-generation frame-based vehicles, the automaker is also working on the new Xpander.

Yes, Mitsubishi is already working on the next-generation Xpander, and it's arriving in 2023. Like the upcoming Montero Sport and Strada, the second-generation MPV is part of Mitsubishi's plan to further strengthen its ASEAN lineup.

Exact details regarding its specifications and design are still a mystery. However, Mitsubishi did say that it will be available as a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). As part of the company's 'New Environmental Plan Package', the Xpander HEV will join Mitsubishi's lineup of electrified vehicles such as the Outlander PHEV, and Eclipse Cross PHEV.

In our previous report, Mitsubishi recently made a big investment at their Indonesia plant that assembles the Xpander and Xpander Cross. Supposedly, they are busy retooling the assembly line for the upcoming hybrid Xpander. The total cost of the retooling and investment is IDR 11.3 trillion or about PHP 38 billion.

As to what will power the electrified Xpander, it could get the powertrain from the Delica D:2 (not to be confused with the larger Delica D:5 van) sold in Japan. It has a 1.2-liter engine paired to a DC synchronous electric motor and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The engine makes 91 PS and 118 Nm of torque while the electric motor packs 3.1 PS and 5.1 Nm of torque. With its average fuel consumption of 22.4 km/l in mixed driving conditions, the Delica D:2's hybrid powertrain could make sense in the Xpander HEV.

With less than two years to go before 2023 hits, Mitsubishi still has time to develop and refine the all-new Xpander and Xpander HEV. But will the automaker offer an electrified version of the MPV for the Philippines? We will have to wait to find out.
