2025 Mazda CX-50 revealed with Toyota hybrid power

It’s only been a few months since Mazda, Subaru, and Toyota announced their joint partnership in developing ICEs tailored for electrification, but now we’re already starting to see the results of their collaboration.

Mazda has revealed the 2025 CX-50 Hybrid – the first electrified CX-50 made available to the US market after its pure ICE versions were launched in late 2021. The rest of the CX-50 lineup has also been refreshed for the 2025 model year, but the big story here is what’s under the hood of the new CX-50 Hybrid – it has a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine combined with three electric motors, a battery, and a CVT.

If that setup sounds familiar, yes Mazda is using Toyota’s hybrid system for the electrified CX-50. The powertrain puts out a combined 219 PS and 230 Nm of torque and powers all four wheels through the standard electric AWD system (eAWD). Mazda says the CX-50 Hybrid can do up to 38 mpg (16 km/l), which is about 40% better than the non-hybrid versions of the CX-50.

While the CX-50 has a Toyota hybrid underneath, Mazda says the crossover will still deliver their signature driving dynamics as they tuned the hybrid powertrain’s accelerator pedal response and other parameters to offer the connected feel that their cars have been known for.

The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid distinguishes itself from other CX-50 models with subtle styling cues, inside and out. Those include unique wheel designs, a different lower front bumper design, and the availability of a new red leather interior option.

Furthermore, the CX-50 Hybrid will serve as a mid-range variant as the CX-50 2.5 Turbo will remain as the top of the line model in the US market.

The CX-50 Hybrid serves as the second model born under the Mazda-Toyota-Subaru collaboration, as the Subaru Crosstrek is also set to utilize Toyota’s hybrid system once it’s launched by around the -BER months of 2024.
