Subaru confirms Crosstrek to use Toyota hybrid tech

Late last year, Subaru revealed the all-new Forester at the LA Auto Show. Aside from having an entirely new construction and added intelligent features, the most notable change to the sixth-generation Forester is the availability of an e-Boxer variant with a hybrid system from Toyota.

Now it turns out Subaru is intent on expanding the use of the Toyota-derived hybrid system to the rest of its models. Subaru has confirmed the next-generation e-Boxer system will be added to the smaller Crosstrek crossover.

Much like the all-new Forester, the Crosstrek will still use a Subaru boxer engine, but the battery and electric components needed for the hybrid system will come from Toyota. Subaru has done this as the Toyota hybrid system proved to fare better in terms of fuel efficiency over the hybrid system that they developed in-house.

Production of the transaxle, which will be the core unit of the next-generation e-Boxer, will begin at the renovated Kitamoto Plant by around the -BER months of 2024.

Furthermore, Subaru is also looking to expand its EV lineup to 8 models by the end of 2028. Much like the Solterra, three of those EVs will be jointly developed with Toyota. Their cooperation also covers the production side, as Subaru and Toyota will share units being produced at both the Subaru Yajima plant in Japan and Toyota’s plant in the United States.
