IndyCar power plants get mandatory turbo upgrade

The latest development in IndyCar racing will mandate all racers to equip their V6 engines with twin turbochargers. This aims to level the capability of engines making Chevy and Honda almost at par with each other. Chevy has been using twin turbochargers in its V6 power plant since 2012 while Honda went with a single turbo system. This engine performance difference led to problems in previous events.
The two engine manufacturers expressed willingness to comply with the new turbo specifications for 2014. The installing the twin turbochargers, to be supplied by Borg Warner, should maintain the performance expected from the racecars and its technological relevance to the industry.
Formula 1 will soon follow suit in the turbocharged trend among the open-wheel series for the 2014 season. However, the F1 racers will be using a single front-mounted turbocharger for the 1.6 liter V6 engines. Smaller than the 2.2 liter V6 of IndyCar racers, the F1 engine still boasts an additional 162 PS to the 608 PS output due to the KERS system.
