Hydrogen fuel cell Toyota Mirai previews future of zero emission racing in Rally Germany
Toyota has previously announced that they will make a comeback in the FIA World Rally Championship in 2017 with a Yaris WRC car.
However, it seems that Toyota can't wait for 2017 as the Japanese company made an appearance during the ADAC Rallye Deutschland with the Mirai. The brand's hydrogen powered Mirai drove through stages during the Rally Germany. The vehicle was driven by Japanese journalist and experienced rally driver Mitsuhiro Kunisawa.
Mirai's chief engineer Yoshikazu Tanaka said that they envision their fuel cell vehicles to be able to compete in WRC.
“It is our dream that one day our fuel cell vehicles will be able to compete in WRC. Therefore, we will continue to develop this technology with great ambition,” Tanaka said.
The Mirai is fitted with slight modifications such as special brake pads, competition tires and a roll cage while the 154 PS fuel cell powertrain of the Mirai remains unchanged. As a review, Mirai's fuel cell system mixes oxygen and hydrogen to create electricity. The vehicle is also designed to emit water vapor.
