This Mitsubishi Xpander has the heart of a Lancer Evo X
Catch the Evo X-powered Mitsubishi Xpander AP4 make it rally debut in New Zealand later this year

Earlier this year at the 2019 Indonesian International Motor Show (IIMS), Mitsubishi revealed an Xpander rally car, called the Xpander AP4 Concept. It wasn’t merely an Xpander slapped on with rally livery together with off-road wheels and tires either because the modifications appear to be more than just skin deep. In fact, if you looked closely at the photos, you’ll notice the wider fenders, roof scoop, and even the intercooler even with the camouflage livery.

At the time, it was merely a concept, but the folks at Mitsubishi Motors Indonesia were dead serious about making it a reality. Now, they have finally pulled the covers off the finished model and announced that they will be competing at rally competitions in the Asia Pacific region.
Compared to the camouflaged model shown as IIMS, not much has changed with regards to the Xpander AP4’s body. However, we do get to see the exterior changes more clearly including wider fender flares, side skirts, and a revised front bumper. Inside, the seven-seat layout has been ditched in favor of a roll cage and a pair of bucket seats.

The biggest change, however, would have to be in the Xpander’s underpinnings. While it still looks like a Mitsubishi Xpander on the outside, the AP4 adopts the full running gear of a Lancer Evolution X including the all-wheel drive system. Under the hood, the Evo X’s stock 2.0-liter 4B11 has been de-stroked to a 1.6-liter mill. Despite having a smaller displacement, it still produces 350 horsepower and 556 Nm of torque which is sent to all four wheels. This isn't your garden variety Xpander.

The rally-spec Xpander will be making its official race debut at the NZRC Goldrush Rally in New Zealand later this year. As the vehicle’s name implies, it will be racing in the AP4 class. Piloting the Xpander AP4 is Indonesian driver Rifat Sungkar with co-driver M. Redwan. Hopefully, the Xpander will be able to carry on some of the Evo's rally legacy considering it uses its running gear.
