This is why Mercedes’ F1 car has a new horseshoe emblem
Mercedes F1 team to race a Silverstone with homage to Stirling Moss

Sir Stirling Moss is no doubt one of the greatest drivers to ever grace motorsports. Though he may have represented a number of manufacturers throughout his career, he is often associated with Mercedes-Benz: from his numerous race wins with the Silver Arrows to the 300 SLR race car. He even has a model named after him – the SLR McLaren Stirling Moss.

As most of you know, Moss passed away earlier this year at the age of 90. In order to pay tribute to the great British racer, the Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 team has revealed a new emblem on their Formula 1 challenger – a horseshoe. If you’re wondering why a horseshoe, that’s because Moss used the very same horseshoe emblem on his race cars in the past.

The emblem was prominently seen on Moss’s pioneering Cooper race cars. He also used the design throughout his Formula 1 career. It’s not just any horseshoe though. The design features a horseshoe that features seven holes which symbolizes his favorite number.
Mercedes-AMG Formula Team announced the new emblem ahead of the 70th British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Coincidentally, Moss also finished as a runner up at the 1955 British Grand Prix driving for Mercedes. It is apt then the new emblem was revealed ahead of the race weekend.

Stirling Moss’ horseshoe emblem will then join the red star on the Mercedes Formula 1 car’s engine cover. The red star is a tribute to three-time champion and former Mercedes-AMG chairman Nikki Lauda, who passed away last year.
Moss may have already passed away, but we think the 'Boy Wonder' of Formula 1 would have approved of the horseshoe design. What a way to pay tribute to one of the greatest F1 drivers that have ever raced in the competition.
