Subaru triumphs yet again in 2019 24 Hours of Nurburgring

Since 2008, the Japanese automaker has been competing in the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. So far, they have had a pretty good batting average at the event too, consistently winning in their class. This year, Subaru has done it again, bringing their total wins around the Green Hell to six. Not only that, it's their fourth win in five years.

This latest motorsports achievement is, by no means, an easy thing to accomplish. The Nurburgring is one of the toughest, if not, the toughest race track in the world. The demanding track spans over 20 kilometers long, has well over 100 corners, and each part of the track can change weather in an instant. There's also the matter of it being bumpy for a race track, which can wear out cars and drivers quickly.

Using the Impreza WRX STI SP3T, the car is still largely based on the road-going version you see in showrooms today. Piloted by Carlo Van Dam, Tim Schrick, Hideki Yamauchi, and Takuto Iguchi, the four practically dominated the class, taking turns to nurse the car in the marathon. At the end of it all, Subaru not only got the win, but reported no problems with the car running for that long.

They also managed to keep the car away from harm, but they almost lost it all when a GT3 car ran into their rear. There was another close call during the 12th hour when Yamauchi narrowly avoided an incident unfolding in front of him.

During this year's running of the endurance race, Subaru managed to lap the track 145 times, which includes the tough Norsdschliefe (North loop) and the grand prix track. With each lap at 25.95 kilometers long, the team ran a total of 3,762 kilometers in one day.
