Report: Porsche mulls exiting Le Mans to build F1 engines

Will Formula One soon see the return of Porsche? The German automaker is no stranger to the most prestigious open-wheel series. Back in the 1950s and 60s, Porsche fielded several cars in the sport. In the 1980s, they built turbo V6 engines for McLaren. After more than 30 years of absence, the latest rumor hints that Porsche may be coming back to Formula One as an engine supplier.

According to a report by Auto Motor und Sport, Porsche was one of the manufacturers in attendance at an F1 engine constructor meeting held last July 4. Also present at the meeting were current engine manufacturers Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault and Honda. However, Aston Martin, Ilmor Engineering, and Cosworth were also in attendance, hinting that Porsche's entry is highly possible to happen.

The report also states that Porsche will soon be deciding on their motorsport's future in the upcoming years. Following three consecutive wins in Le Mans, it is said that there is not much more for Porsche to gain in the World Endurance Cup series, and would likely shift into open-wheel racing. The German automaker would do so by joining Formula 1 as an engine supplier, or possibly even entering Formula E give their knowledge with hybrids.

Earlier this year, Porsche won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with their 919 Hybrid racecar. However, the vehicle's competitiveness has been in question, given the events that transpired during the 24 hour race, and whether they should still stick to the series. If the reports are true, then we could be hearing about Porsche's motorsport plans for the future soon.
