Report: Jenson Button to stay at McLaren F1 for 2015

The 34-year-old 2009 Formula One world champion Jenson Button is staying at McLaren alongside 2005-2006 champion Fernando Alonso for the 2015 F1 season. This was confirmed by a tweet by McLaren test driver Gary Paffet congratulating Button on keeping his 2015 McLaren seat furhter saying "They have a very experienced driver lineup with him and Alonso."

The McLaren Honda F1 team have opted for a more experience lineup and has decided to retain Button after weeks of favoring the rookie driver Kevin Magnussen.

During the past weeks, McLaren chairman Ron Dennis and racing director Eric Boullier have indicated that they opt to retain the young Magnussen to partner with Alonso. For them, they believe that the combination of experience and youth will give them a successful 2015 F1 season.

With this recent development, it seems that Dennis and Boullier have leaned on Button's experience and strong finish during the recently concluded F1 season. Button outscored Magnussen 126 points to 55 last season and outqualified the rookie 10-9 in 19 races. Moreover, McLaren's decision to retain Button may be influenced by Honda who established a good relationship with the British driver when he drove for the them from 2003 to 2008.

The team was intending to retain Magnussen because their data suggested that the youngster was fractionally quicker than Button.

As of this writing, the McLaren Honda F1 team will officially announce their driver-line up at their factory in Surrey this afternoon (Thursday morning GMT).
