Report: Does Porsche want a Formula One comeback?
Porsche is reportedly considering a return to Formula 1 according to Gerhard Berger

Last year, Porsche was reportedly considering a return to Formula 1 as an engine supplier. The Stuttgart-based automaker was said to be in attendance at an F1 engine constructors meeting together with the current engine manufacturers. Now, a new report has surfaced that Porsche could be considering a full entry into the top tier of international open-wheel racing.
According to Auto Bild, Gerhard Berger, former F1 driver and the head of DTM (the premier German touring car series), says that Porsche is thinking about re-entering Formula 1 in 2021. Currently, Porsche already confirmed entery into Formula E beginning the 2019 season. This came after the automaker announced their LMP1 team will officially pulled from the World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the end of the 2017 season.
“Porsche is thinking about a Formula 1 entry for 2021. They are just waiting for the new engine regulations, which should be published in May, and then will decide,” Berger told German publication Auto Bild.
Recently, Porsche did release a video of the unrestricted 919 Hybrid Evo on the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit. It managed to set a new lap record on the Belgian track, beating Lewis Hamilton's lap record in a Formula 1 car.
During Porsche's time as an engine supplier in Formula One, they enjoyed plenty of success. Porsche-powered McLaren Formula One cars won 25 times and took the driver's championship for three straight years from 1984 to 1986 with Niki Lauda and Alain Prost. McLaren also took the constructor's titles in 1984 and 1985. Porsche also won a grand prix in 1962 as a constructor with Dan Gurney at the wheel.
Porsche last participated in Formula 1 as the engine supplier of the Footwork Arrows team in 1991.
