Report: Cosworth preparing for Formula One return

The last time we heard of Cosworth in Formula One was back in 2013, when the engine maker supplied the 2.4-liter V8 for the Marussia F1 team. The year after, Formula 1 saw the introduction of the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine, and Cosworth simply opted not to build an engine fit for the 2014 regulations.

However, Motorsport.com has learned that Cosworth could soon be returning to the pinnacle of open-wheel racing. In fact, the engine builder, along with Porsche, was part of the recently concluded engine rules meeting for F1 after 2020. Though there have not yet been an official signing, Cosworth feels as though it can come back to the sport.

“I think that we've got sufficient support from the existing teams, and we've had discussions with some, that enable us to make the commitment to proceed,” said Hal Reisiger, Cosworth's CEO in an interview with Motorsport.com. Reisiger adds that they have also gained more long-term commitment from teams, though most were verbal agreements.

Currently, Formula 1 is trying to finalize the new engine regulations for the 2021 season. Reisiger commented that F1 should move away from the heat energy recovery element as it has been troublesome and time-cosnuming for engine manufacturers. Despite not being in the series for four years and counting, he believes that Cosworth can still be competitive and win races if they return in 2021.

At the moment, no team has confirmed their partnership with Cosworth yet. Though a scenario that could play out is linking up with Red Bull. The two have already worked together on the Aston Martin Valkyrie, and Cosworth is suspected to have established ties with Red Bull as a long-term partner. Reisiger, however, says that no decision will be made until next year.
