Porsche 99X Electric is the wildest-looking Formula E car

Porsche's Formula E challenger has been in development for quite some time now, and we even got to see undergoing testing earlier this year. Today, the all-electric racer is finally complete and the German automaker has officially revealed their first-ever Formula E car, complete with racing livery.

Officially called the 99X Electric, it is undoubtedly one of the wildest looking cars to ever join the Formula E grid. Unlike the development photos where the 99X was finished in black/exposed carbon fiber, the car's aggressive aero can now be seen more easily. It's most notable design cue would have to be the rear end which features a very aggressive rear diffuser and with a unique split-wing design. Integrated into the halo is an LED which denotes the car's power mode. Completing the racecar makeover would be Porsche's signature motorsport color of white, black and red.

Speaking of power, the 99X's electric drivetrain was developed from the lessons and insights Porsche learned from their LMP1 project, particularly the 919 Hybrid. As the car will be racing in a regulated series, maximum power is capped at 340 horsepower together with a 52 kWh battery. With it, the German marque has developed the powertrain to be very efficient.

“Today is an important day. With the premiere of the Porsche 99X Electric, we are taking a big step towards the Porsche works entry in Formula E. I am really proud of our team, which has shown a high level of commitment to the Formula E project. Now I am looking forward to seeing the Porsche 99X Electric on the racetrack,” said Fritz Enzinger, Vice President Porsche Motorsport, and Group Motorsport Volkswagen AG.

Porsche intends to use the knowledge gained from Formula E in order to develop and refine future EV technology which will make its way into production cars. Meanwhile, the 99X Electric will serve as a development platform for future fully-electric production models.

Considering how successful Porsche was in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), the question now is whether the automaker will experience the same success in Formula E. Expect the car to make its official race debut in November this year.
