Philippines to join GR Supra GT Cup Asia this July
Philippines has been in included in official Toyota Gazoo Racing E-Sports program, starts in July 2020
The postponement of the 2020 Toyota Vios Racing Festival has left local Gazoo Racing and motorsport fans alike to miss the racetrack. However, with the COVID-19 global pandemic still threatening billions globally, mass gatherings such as physical racing are still restricted.
“Safety of our customers, employees, and fans are always at the top of our priority,” expressed Atsuhiro Okamoto, TMP president.
This has prompted Toyota Motor Philippines to launch of their official E-Sports program - GR Supra GT Cup Asia - Philippines.
“But we also recognize the value of waku-doki spirit in everyone! This is a great way to sustain the excitement of motorsports program in the Philippines in a safe environment,” added Okamoto.
The GR Supra GT Cup Asia is an e-racing event officially under Toyota’s Gazoo Racing motorsports program. The Philippine leg will be fully held online and will be open to the public, ages 18 and above. The Gran Turismo Sport-based online race series will use Toyota’s legendary sports car icon, the GR Supra, which is expected to start in July 2020. Winners of the e-race will get a chance to participate in the regional finals, the GR Supra GT Cup – Asia.
E-Sports in the Philippines has grown in popularity over the years. The addition of E-sports programs in various international competitions has produced Filipino medalists; making video gaming into a sport where Filipinos can actually be competitive in.
As the Toyota Vios Racing Festival has been temporarily postponed to 2021, the GR Supra GT Cup Asia hopes to connect fans with the waku-doki life, albeit in a virtual experience.
“We look forward to a better 2021 Vios Racing Festival Season where we can go back to the tracks again and feel the heat and excitement. But for now, we invite everyone to join the GR Supra GT Cup Asia E-Sports Program,” Okamoto concluded.
