Peugeot's upcoming Le Mans hypercar looks wild

Earlier this year, Peugeot officially announced that they will be making a return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the World Endurance Championship (WEC). In particular, the French automaker will be competing in the new Hypercar class, and will be marking their return to WEC after last competing in 2012.

Now, Peugeot has finally provided us a first look at their upcoming WEC Hypercar class challenger, and it looks wild. Unfortunately, the French automaker has provided only one photo for now, showing us the aggressive front end. Do expect the rest of the vehicle to be equally as crazy as the front end, as seen in the massive rear wing. However, an even wilder thought is seeing one of these production models driving on the streets.

According to homologation rules of the new WEC Hypercar Class, manufacturers are required to both build and sell at least 25 production versions of their race car in order in order for it to be legal. As such, Peugeot will have to build a road-legal version of this crazy looking hypercar. Considering the photos shown is still a render, the French automaker still has a lot of time toying around with the final design.

For those wondering, Peugeot has never built a supercar or a hypercar before. So, building one for the first time to compete in WEC is a tall order. Fortunately, this isn’t the first time the automaker will compete in the series. In fact, they have a successful history at Le Mans with their previous 908 series LMP1 cars. They also partnered with Swiss privateer Rebellion Racing in order to build the car, and race it as well.

The new WEC Hypercar Class is set to replace the LMP1 category in the 2020/2021 season. However, Peugeot’s contender will only be hitting the track in 2022.
