Ogier wins 2015 Rally Italy, extends championship lead
Sebastien Ogier registered his fourth win in six rounds of the 2015 World Rally Championship
Volkswagen's Sébastien Ogier extended his lead in the drivers' championship standings by winning the 2015 Rally Italy by 3min 05.4sec. Completing the top three finishers were Hyundai drivers Hayden Paddon and Thierry Neuville.
Ogier dominated the 2015 Rally Italy as he won the final power stage and collected an additional three bonus points. The Volkswagen driver registered his fourth win in six rounds of the 2015 World Rally Championship (WRC).
Ogier said that his win in Rally Italy was very important in their campaign for the world championship.
“The win here on Sardinia was very important in our fight for the world championship. We now have a big lead over our rivals,” Ogier said in a statement.
Paddon started the 2015 Rally Italy with an 8.8 second advantage and maintained his lead until he committed a small error which allowed Ogier to take pole position. Then, Paddon had gearbox problems in the closing two stages. Despite losing pole, Paddon had his career best result.
Thierry Neuville finished in third place and was 4min 22.5sec behind Ogier. Hyundai's Neuville demoted Citroen's Mads Østberg when the Norwegian went off the road and damaged his DS 3 car. As a result, Østberg dropped to fifth overall.
After the 2015 Rally Italy, Ogier extended his lead in the drivers' championship standings to 66 points with a total of 133. Ogier's closest rival is Citroen's Østberg who has 67 points. Coming in at third is Volkswagen's Andreas Mikkelsen who has 64 points.
The next round of the 2015 WRC will be staged in Poland on July 2 to 5.
