Not street legal: Maserati reveals MCXtrema race car

About a year ago, Maserati revealed they were working on “Project 24”: single-seater unhomologated race car that's based on the MC20.

Now they have an official name for it: MCXtrema.

Maserati has unveiled their limited-edition super sports car at the Monterey Car Week. As they announced last year, the MCXtrema will only be limited to 62 units.

Shown for the first time in the metal, the Maserati MCXtrema's monocoque chassis is made of ultra-light carbon fiber, resulting in a dry weight of approximately 1300 kg. Maserati Centro Stile designed some extreme aerodynamic solutions to maximize the potential of the MC20 chassis. The MCXtrema sports a shark fin engine cover, an aggressive front splitter, a huge rear wing at the back, and a diffuser.

Inside, the MCXtrema is designed to deliver on four fronts: safety, control, performance and -believe it or not- comfort. The car has FIA-homologated racing seats, 6-point belts and a roll cage to protect the driver whatever happens on the track. It also comes standard with safety nets, a fire extinguisher and an integrated roof hatch.

In terms of control, the cockpit features a fully adjustable steering column and pedal box to find the most optimal driver position. Speaking of the cockpit, the driver will have immediate access to different settings, from steering calibration to traction control levels, from brake balance to engine strategies, allowing for a perfect fit to any driving style and any track or weather configuration. Lastly, the MCXtrema cabin features an air-conditioning system for your comfort.

Powering the MCXtrema is a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine derived from the road-going MC20's Nettuno unit. Its maximum output is 730 PS, while its maximum torque is rated at 730 Nm. It features dry-sump lubrication and is controlled by a Bosch MS 6.4 EVO ECU. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential racing gearbox and a mechanical LSD suited for racing purposes.

Other features optimized for racing include carbon brakes with adjustable racing ABS, Motorsport 4-way adjustable dampers front and rear, as well as bespoke 18” forged aluminum rims with center lock fixing wrapped on racing slick or wet tires from Pirelli.

Since the MCXtrema is not homologated to compete in any racing series, its purpose is designed for purist collectors and for the loyal customers of the brand, who wish to add a new “toy” to their garage that can swallow up the kerbs of the most exciting tracks during private tests.
