Nico Rosberg wins 2015 Monaco Grand Prix

Nico Rosberg has luckily won the 2015 Monaco Grand Prix after the Mercedes F1 team made a huge strategy error towards the latter part of the race.

Starting from pole, Lewis Hamilton had dominated the race and seemed ready to take another Grand Prix win, until the safety car was deployed in lap 64 due to Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen contact with Lotus’ Romain Grosjean.

Before the collision involving Verstappen and Grosjean, Hamilton was leading the race by around 20 seconds. With this, the Mercedes F1 team thought that there was enough time to make a precautionary pit stop.

However, Hamilton found himself in a bad situation as his teammate rival Rosberg and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel went past him as he was exiting the pit lane.

With the safety car still deployed, Hamilton dropped two places while Rosberg suddenly became the race leader and Vettel managed to squeeze his car in second place.

When the safety car finally went off track, Rosberg took the chance to build his lead while Hamilton couldn’t manage to overtake Vettel’s Ferrari in the tight street course. With only a few laps remaining, Rosberg cruised his way to victory as Vettel finished in second and Hamilton in third.      

On the other hand, the Red Bull drivers had a good race as Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo finished in fourth and fifth respectively. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen took the sixth spot while Force India’s Sergio Perez claimed the seventh place.

Aside from Red Bull, the McLaren-Honda has the luxury to celebrate as Jenson Button gave the team its first championship points by finishing the race in eighth place. Completing the top ten finishers were Sauber’s Felipe Nasr and Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz.
