We may not be seeing any live action on the track right now, but there's a lot going on behind the scenes in Formula 1 as Toto Wolff, the chief of the Mercedes-AMG team, has just bought shares in Aston Martin.

Now, this doesn't mean Wolff will be leaving his post over at Mercedes-AMG. After all, he led the team to six consecutive constructors titles and six successive driver's titles (5 for Lewis Hamilton and 1 for Nico Rosberg). His involvement with Aston Martin is as a private investor as the British automaker stages a Formula 1 comeback.

Aston Martin has, in fact, a technical partnership with Mercedes-AMG.

The British sports car maker's return to Formula 1 will be through Racing Point and the team will soon be renamed to Aston Martin Racing. Team owner Lawrence Stroll bought a significant share of the manufacturer recently, hence the name change. Racing Point uses Mercedes-AMG engines in their Formula 1 efforts, just like some of Aston Martin's road cars.

As said by a Mercedes-Benz spokesperson, “It is a financial investment and Toto's partnership and executive role with Mercedes are unaffected by the transaction".

Wolff will not be involved in the day to day operations of Aston Martin and Racing Point.

Interestingly enough, Wolff also manages returning F1 driver Esteban Ocon who was just hired by the Renault F1 team.
