Mazda6 SKYACTIV-D Racecar to Hit Indy
The Mazda6 SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel racecar will run at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week.

The Mazda6 SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel racecar will run at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week. This appearance follows the absence of a diesel-powered racecar on the track for 60 years. The last time Indy had seen one was back in the 1952 Indianapolis 500 with the appearance of Cummins Diesel Special.
The design behind Mazda’s SKYACTIV comes from racecars – optimum efficiency through decreased weight, friction, and aero drag. Moreover, racecars also prioritize better fuel economy. This concept is the driver for Mazda’s designs, whether it is for race or production. Mazda’s end goal is to have a satisfied customer. However, regular customers will want something more than just a racecar. For this demand, Mazda considers superb driving dynamics, great fuel mileage, and good-looking package at an affordable price.
The SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel engine that powers the new Mazda6 is a true production-based engine. Its engine is 51% stock by parts count, and 63% stock by weight. Mazda believes that this is the best way to feature the quality, durability, and reliability their vehicles.
In January, the car became the first diesel racecar to compete at Daytona. By April, the Mazda6 SKYACTIV-D became the first ever diesel-powered Grand-Am winner at Road Atlanta. The Indy stint this week will surely add another milestone to the car and brand’s history.
