Maserati to join Formula E grid in 2023

Maserati is truly embracing electrification. Aside from releasing hybrid versions of the Levante and Ghibli, the Italian automaker will be returning to the motorsport scene. But instead of joining Formula 1, Maserati will instead be racing in Formula E.

You read right, Maserati will be competing as a new manufacturer starting in 2023. This is the first time an Italian company has joined the electric motorsport series and is set to renew Maserati’s racing spirit.

That’s why we decided to go back to racing in the FIA Formula E World Championship, meeting our customers in the city centers of the world, taking the Trident forward into the future,” said David Grasso, CEO of Maserati.

Maserati will debut on the grid starting in Season 9 with the new Gen3 race cars. They are currently the fastest, lightest, and most powerful Formula E racer to date. With Maserati’s know-how in electrification, they are confident that they can improve on what the Gen3 already has to offer.

The last time Maserati appeared on the race track was from 2004 to 2010. During that time, they competed with the MC12 which won 22 races (including 3 victories in the 24 Hours of Spa) and 14 championship titles across Constructors’ Championships, Drivers’ Championships, and Teams’ Championships in the FIA GT. Historically though, Maserati does have great racing pedigree in open wheel racing. They did win two driver's title's with Juan Manuel Fangio in 1954 and 1957. 

With Maserati looking towards an electric future, will they be able to carry the Trident to the podium? We’ll know once they officially join the grid next year.
