Lamborghini to join Le Mans hypercar grid in 2024

In two years' time, the Le Mans hypercar class already has a total of 11 teams competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Come 2024, a 12th team will be joining the grid.

Lamborghini Squadra Corse has announced they are developing a prototype to race in the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship.

The team has been competing in sports car racing in the GT class. And now, the Italian manufacturer is stepping up to compete for overall victories in the world's most prestigious endurance races – the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona, and the 12 Hours of Sebring.

“This step up into the highest echelon of sports car racing marks an important milestone for our company. We will be measuring ourselves against the very best, on the most demanding proving grounds. On one hand, this will give our successful motorsports program even more visibility, but it will also allow us to test future technologies: our LMDh prototypes will become our most sophisticated open laboratory on four wheels” said Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman, and CEO.

Together with Audi, Porsche, Acura, BMW, Cadillac, and Alpine, Lamborghini will be competing in 2024 under the WEC LMDh class, which utilizes a spec chassis and a mandatory hybrid system. This is in line with the manufacturer's aim to hybridize the entire Lamborghini model range.

But wait, there's more. Aside from the teams mentioned in the LMDh class, Lamborghini will also be competing against Toyota, Glickenhaus, Vanwall, Peugeot, and Ferrari for the overall win, as the five teams are also in the Hypercar class, but is under the LMH category. This gives them free rein to design their chassis, as well as an optional hybrid system.

The vast number of entries in the Le Mans hypercar class for 2024 is something Formula One can only dream about. And honestly, we can't wait for these manufacturers to commence their 24-hour battle at the Circuit de la Sarthe.
