Formula BMW Asia Action Continues in June

Formula BMW Asia, the region's most prestigious single seater series, is set to continue next month following a thrilling season-opener as part of the Petronas Malaysian F1 Grand Prix weekend in March.

The exciting new series, which boasts the most talented young drivers from all corners of the Asian region, will resume on June 7th and 8th returning to Malaysia's state-of-the-art racing facility, Sepang.

Following rounds 3 and 4 at Sepang, Formula BMW Asia moves to the Pasir Gudang race track in Johor for the next two exciting rounds.

The provisional calendar was amended due to the SARS issue, and organisers of the series, Motorsport Asia Limited, is working closely with Malaysia's health authorities to ensure all guidelines are strictly followed.

The opening rounds of the Formula BMW Asia Series in March saw 20-year-old Chinese driver, Tung Ho-Pin, dominate both races leading from pole to chequered flag in the two 10-lap sprints for Team Meritus.

However, several other drivers took the chance to shine in front of the Formula 1 fraternity and there is little doubt that, as the season progresses, many of these youngsters will develop in leaps and bounds.

Thailand's Nattapong Horthongkum finished second and third in rounds 1 and 2 respectively, while skilled Japanese lady driver (one of two competing in the series), crossed the line behind Tung in the second race.

Hanse Lin of Taiwan, the second of three Team Meritus entries, finished round one in third place, a sterling effort from the 23-year-old.

Truly representative of the Asian region, the Formula BMW Asia field is made up of drivers from Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea and India, five of whom are recipients of Formula BMW scholarships which provide both financial assistance and training throughout the season.

Following the upcoming rounds in Malaysia, Formula BMW moves to Thailand, followed by South Korea, Japan and China.
