Formula 1 completes 2020 season calendar with 17 races
Formula 1 manages to hold 17-race season amid COVID-19 pandemic
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers of Formula 1 managed to start racing again last July. However, the 2020 season calendar was no doubt in pieces as a number of races have been canceled due to the pandemic. Specifically, some races outside of Europe are no longer taking place. Instead, they had to resort to holding double races at some circuits.
Fortunately, the organizers have managed to add new races in the calendar over the course of the past few months. Now, more races have been added once again, extending the season all the way until December.
Formula 1 organizers have announced that four new races will be happening from November to December. The first, Round 14, will be taking place in Turkey at the Istanbul Park Circuit from November 13 to 15. The 5.3-kilometer circuit hadn’t hosted a Formula One race in nine years. For reference, the last Turkish Grand Prix saw Sebastian Vettel, who was still with Red Bull, take the win back in 2011.
Following the Turkish Grand Prix, Formula 1 teams will be heading to Bahrain for Round 15 and 16 on November 27-29 and December 4-6. Yes, it will be a back to back race similar to Austria and in Great Britain. Both races, the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Sakhir Grand Prix will be held at the Bahrain International Circuit.
The season concluding race will once again be held in Abu Dhabi – Round 17. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, originally scheduled for late November, will now take place from December 11-13.
Interestingly, it seems we might see the return of live fans later on in the season as well. In a statement, organizers said that “a number of races in the revised 2020 season will be open to a limited number of fans, including hospitality, and we are working with each promoter to finalize the details”. Since the Formula 1 season started in July, all races have been a no-spectator event.
