FIA: More stringent Super License point system for 2016
The FIA will impose a more rigorous pointing system in acquiring a Super License for Formula 1 come 2016
With younger drivers becoming more eligible in acquiring a Super License needed to join Formula 1, the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile recently revealed a new point system that will make it harder for drivers in gaining entry to Formula 1 racing.
Scheduled to take effect by 2016, prospective drivers must accumulate at least 40 points over a three-year period, wherein the points gained will be based on which other motorsport series the driver competed in and the level of results that they have attained.
Drivers must also be at least 18-years old, have spent at least 2 years in junior-single seater divisions, have a valid driver's license and be able to pass a test on Formula 1 sporting regulations. The requirement of completing a 300 km in a recent F1 car was kept for 2016 regulations.
Junior categories that are eligible for the new point system, in order of weighting, include a future FIA F2 championship (60 points for winner), GP2 (50 points), FIA F3 European championship (40 points), IndyCar (40 points), GP3 (30 points), Formula Renault 3.5 (30 points), Japanese Star Formula (20 points), national FIA-certified F4 championships (10 points) national F3 championships (10 points) and Formula Renault (Eurocup, ALPS or NEC, 5 points).
If the new point system was implemented earlier, Formula 1's latest driver, 17-year old Max Verstappen under Toro Rosso, would not have been qualified to join F1 this year since he was only able to get 20 points by finishing 3rd in the 2014 FIA F3 European championship.
