Report: Fernando Alonso set to ink biggest contract in F1 history
McLaren-Honda F1 team is ready to sign Fernando Alonso to the most expensive multi-year driver contract, reports say
Ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix there a reports that Fernando Alonso’s services are already spoken for, at least in principle. McLaren-Honda is on the brink of getting the two-time World Champion’s signature and will usher his return to the team he left in not-so-good terms in 2007.
The estimated USD 40 million (PhP 1.780 billion) contract will be the biggest in F1 history and will run for at least two seasons.
This agreement binds Alonso with the team for two years, with an option for a third and takes out any possibility of him joining Mercedes if F1’s current Constructors’ Champions have an opening in 2016.
Alonso becomes the centerpiece of McLaren as they usher in the new engine from Honda and will be partnered with Kevin Magnussen in 2015.
That puts the tenure of Jenson Button in question despite having given McLaren a far superior performance compared to Magnussen.
It would be cheaper to retain Magnussen instead of teaming up two former World Champions next season but when asked about Button, "Hopefully he will stay. He is a very talented driver, a great character and good person. People like him are good for our sport. Whether we will see him on the grid, you need to ask McLaren," said Alonso.
McLaren wants to return to their old form as they continue to seek their first win in F1 since 2012. The team is very optimistic about the upcoming season with Honda’s new engine and the return of Alonso.
