Fernando Alonso crashes McLaren-Honda in F1 pre-season testing
The two-time Formula One champion was conscious after crashing during the final day of pre-season testing in Barcelona
McLaren-Honda's Fernando Alonso crashed during the final day of pre-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
The two-time Formula One (F1) champion left the the track at the circuit's turn three, causing the right-hand side of his McLaren-Honda car to hit the wall. With this, Alonso was brought to the the circuit's medical center before being airlifted to a hospital where CT and MRI scans were made as precautionary measures.
The circuit's medical team reported that the Spaniard was “okay and conscious” before leaving for hospital.
“Fernando was driven to the circuit's Medical Centre where the circuit's doctors gave him first aid. He was conscious and spoke with the doctors,” McLaren-Honda F1 team said in a statement.
On the other hand, BBC reported that Sebastian Vettel was right behind Alonso at the time of the crash.
“The speed was slow – maybe 150 km/h. Then he turned right into the wall. It looked strange,” Vettel said.
