Indy 500 winner and 2005 IndyCar champion Dan Wheldon dies in a crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Another great racing hero has passed as Dan Wheldon, 2005 IndyCar Series champion and 2-time Indy 500 winner was killed in a 15 car pile up at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The race event was the finale of the Izod IndyCar Series.
As you can see from the race footage below, Wheldon was at the back of the pack when the crash occurred. Unable to avoid the huge accident, Wheldon's car was launched into the air, flipped and caught fire. Wheldon's passing was announced at 6:00 PM Eastern Time (U.S.).
Dan Wheldon was a British-born racing driver racing in the Izod IndyCar Series. Early in his open-wheel racing career, he developed a rivalry with fellow Brit and 2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button. Wheldon then moved to the United States to compete in various open wheel races there with much success, including winning the 2003 Rookie of the Year award in the IndyCar series, the 2005 Championship, as well as the 2005 and 2011 Indy 500.
Dan Wheldon was 33.
