Built for the track: Mercedes-AMG unveils 707 PS GT2 race car

Mercedes-AMG may have already ended production of the road-going GT sports car, but the ones built for the track remain alive – in fact, they're getting even faster.

From the 2023 racing season onwards, Mercedes-AMG is expanding its customer racing program by adding the more potent GT2 race car. The new model joins the successful AMG GT3 and GT4 race cars that have been racing in various FIA-sanctioned GT series around the world.

While it does not look too far off the outgoing Black Series road car, Mercedes-AMG designed a new aerodynamic kit for the GT2 race car. The most striking feature is its huge rear wing with a swan neck mount, which can be fully adjusted to suit different circuit layouts.

Power is courtesy of AMG's flat-plane 4.0-liter Biturbo V8 engine that puts out 707 PS and up to 800 Nm of torque. That immense power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a sequential six-speed gearbox with adjustable gear ratios. To fine-tune its handling, the AMG GT2 has been fitted with a multi-adjustable double wishbone suspension system, and traction control to put power to the ground more effectively.

As with other GT race cars, the AMG GT2 comes with a standard FIA-spec rollcage, a fire suppression system, and a carbon driver safety cell for optimum occupant protection. The race car rolls on 18-inch forged AMG central lock light alloy wheels with 325/660-18 slick tires in front and 325/705-18 slicks at the rear. Fuel tank capacity is limited to 120 liters per GT2 regulations.

Sales of the Mercedes-AMG GT2 will start in the course of the 2023 motorsport season, but the brand has not announced pricing details yet. Teams that will run the Mercedes-AMG GT2 will get to enjoy full technical support from HWA AG, including maintenance and overhauls.
