BMW, Ford contemplating return to Formula One
F1's shift to prioritizing hybrid and turbo technology seems to have attracted automakers

With the pressure to downsize engines and put more focus on propulsion using sustainable technology, Formula 1 (F1) dropped a few notches to V6 engines, turbocharged the hell out of theseand added hybrid technology to the existing kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) system.
It may not have been able to maintain the Formula 1 audial symphony that fans love to hear, but it has piqued the interest of automakers that have been looking for ways to boost the power of small engines with turbo and hybrid tech.
Scuderia Toro Rosso founder Giancarlo Minardi has noted the presence of BMW engineers and technicians during F1’s pre-season tests and even during the races. According to him, they certainly weren’t there to watch the race.
Minardi adds that this push comes from BMW’s Director of Brand Management and Marketing Services, Steven Althaus. In addition, he said the BMW Group Board of Directors could convene this May to decide if they will return for Formula 1in 2015.
BMW did not confirm nor shoot down the rumor entirely.
“Our focus has not changed. Formula one is not a topic for us as we are very happy in production car racing,” said BMW spokesman JorgKottmeier.
Ford, on the other hand, is rumored to be in talks to take over the Cosworth V6 turbo engine program and may be the ideal partner for F1’s newest licensee, Gene Haas.
