BMW and DS Automobiles joins Formula E
Formula E series announces new manufacturers and regulation changes for upcoming seasons.
The FIA has recently announced that nine manufactures have been accepted as powertrain suppliers for the upcoming seasons of the FIA Formula E series. Two of the latest manufacturers to join the series are BMW and DS Automobiles.
Aside from Renault, Jaguar Land Rover and Audi, BMW has now joined the line up along with DS automobiles. Other none-major manufacturers that are also part of Formula E are Mahindra Racing, NextEV NIO, Penske Autosport and Venturi Automobiles. The manufacturers will be involved in the Formula E series until its seventh season in 2021.
With the updated list of manufacturers, the 2018/19 season will also see the debut of the updated Formula E car. The chassis will be produced by Spark Racing Technology, who won the chassis tender. Starting from the fifth season, the series will also feature a new battery, which will be standard on all chassis and produced by McLaren Applied Technology. Manufacturers would then need to make their powertrains work with these components.
“The homologation of the powertrains that will be used as from season 5 is a very significant step because it means the cars will be able to run for twice as long while, at the very least, maintaining the same performance level,” said FIA president Jean Todt.
Formula E's fifth season is said to be a important step in the development of the electric racecar series as drivers would only be allowed to use a single car as compared to the two car system currently used. Along with new manufacturers joining, expect more in the coming seasons of Formula E.
