Audi to exit DTM after 2020 season, will focus on Formula E
Audi will no longer be competing in DTM series after this year, to put more effort into Formula E instead
Audi is undoubtedly the longest-running team to ever compete in the German touring car series DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters). They have been continuously competing in DTM as early as 1990 when the series was still in its old format. However, it seems that this will soon be coming to an end. The German automaker has announced that they will be exiting the series at the end of the 2020 season.
The automaker cites economic challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic as one of the main reasons behind the exit. However, they also mentioned that they will be focusing their efforts on their Formula E team as well. Specifically, they say the all-electric series will be taking the main stage in Audi’s future motorsport activities.
“Audi has shaped the DTM and the DTM has shaped Audi. This demonstrates what power lies in motorsport – technologically and emotionally. With this energy, we’re going to drive our transformation into a provider of sporty, sustainable electric mobility forward. That’s why we’re also focusing our efforts on the race track and systematically competing for tomorrow’s ‘Vorsprung,’” said Markus Duesmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG.
Over the decades of competing in the series, Audi has built a successful journey in DTM. The automaker scored a total of 23 championship titles, including eleven driver titles, plus 114 victories, 345 podium finishes, 106 pole positions, and 112 fastest lap times. With the 2020 DTM season currently on hold and set to begin later this year, expect the German marque to rack up more wins and podium finishes.
Once Audi leaves after the 2020 season, BMW would be the sole manufacturer remaining in the series. Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin previously competed in DTM as well. However, both automakers left the series in 2018 and 2019, respectively. With that, the future of DTM put in question. Here’s to hoping other manufacturers make a return to the series in order to keep it running for years to come.
