Trademark filing says Ford may bring back the Thunder line
Based on a trademark filing in Canada, Ford aims to bring back the Thunder badge in three truck models

After the lightning comes, thunder. Ford has been busy with the electrification of certain models including its electric F-150 truck simply called Lightning. The electrified rugged pickup has been performing very well and has delivered stayed true to Ford’s EV vision.

A couple of years ago, Ford released the limited Thunder series in the EU market. Total sales volume was at just 4,500 units. The Thunder line had the Raptor’s twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel engine planted in the aggressive-looking Wildtrak body. The model had a gray exterior with black ad red trim and of course, had the Thunder badging all around it. Completing the whole package, the interior was blacked out but had red highlighting to give that signature Thunder feel.

Based on recent trademark filings in Canada, it looks like Ford will be reviving the Thunder line. The filing suggested three models and it looks like the F-150, Ranger and the Maverick will all be sporting the Thunder badge soon.

We could see beefier and rugged versions of the aforementioned trucks. With total electrification of vehicles by 2040, Ford may be gearing up to have noteworthy offerings on both sides of the fence. There’s a little pushback from some car companies on the 2040 mandate as some still feel that petrol engines still have a place in the industry.

Locally though, with the new Ranger and Everest on the horizon, will Ford be bringing the Thunder badging here too? We have the F-150 and Ranger in our local lineup. Sadly the Maverick is absent. If they revive the Thunder line, will they give local enthusiasts a taste? Only Ford knows.
