Toyota PH recalls hybrid RAV4, Lexus NX for stability control issue

Toyota's solid reputation when it comes to build quality and reliability is being tested once again. After issuing a recall for certain GR Yaris units over a critical safety sensor error, the automaker has posted another recall campaign, this time affecting select Lexus NX HEV and RAV4 HEV models.

Based on the recall notice (AKA: special service campaign) Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) submitted to the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI), a total of 132 officially sold vehicles are affected. This consists of 40 units of the NX HEV and 92 examples of the RAV4 HEV. In the global market, the production period of the affected vehicles is from Oct 8, 2019, to April 7, 2022.

The main issue surrounding the recall involves the Skid Control ECU of the vehicle stability control (VSC) found in both the RAV4 and NX. Due to incorrect programming of the software after a particular set of operating inputs from the driver, the VSC may not return to the default 'ON' setting the next time the vehicle is turned off. This can happen if the driver manually turns off the VSC and the ignition is turned off and then turned back on while the brake pedal is still depressed.

Should the driver forget to turn on the VSC while driving, this can increase the risk of a crash during certain driving conditions. But why is the VSC so important? From its namesake, VSC is an important safety feature that works automatically to help the driver maintain control of the car during tricky steering maneuvers. This feature can help prevent oversteer and understeer, as well as reduce the risk of a rollover.

TMP will fix the VSC issue at no cost to its customers. All affected customers will have to do is bring their vehicles to the nearest Toyota dealership in order to get them checked and/or fixed.
