Toyota PH: Fortuner, Hilux, LC300 not affected by engine issue

Yesterday, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), admitted that three of its diesel engines passed certification using ECUs (electronic control units) with different software. The result is incorrect values showing the engine performing “smoother and with less variation.”

TMC released a comprehensive report stating which engines, on what vehicles, and even the month these units began sales. It is as follows:

• 1GD engine - Land Cruiser Prado, Hilux, Hiace, and Fortuner (sold in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa)
• 2GD engine - Hilux (sold in Japan) and Innova (sold in Asia)
• F33A engine – Land Cruiser 300 (sold in Asia, Europe, Middle East, and Africa) and the LX500d (sold in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East)

To learn whether or not our readers and Toyota owners in the Philippines are affected, we asked Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP). Below is their official reply:

“Toyota Industries Corporation, a company affiliated with Toyota Motor Corporation, announced on January 29, 2024, that irregularities in horsepower output certification tests applicable to certain countries were found on three Toyota engine models. However, this issue does not affect any vehicle in the Philippines.

As a reference, this matter relates to irregularities in the certification process based on national requirements in certain countries but does not have any impact on horsepower, torque, or other powertrain-related values. Additionally, these irregularities do not compromise the emissions or safety of their vehicles.

We would like to reassure our customers by stating that we believe their vehicles are unaffected by these irregularities. We apologize for any confusion or concern this issue may have caused.”

Part of TMC’s measures to rectify their error was to suspend shipment of all affected units. As of today, TMP has not been able to determine if the suspension will affect the supply of units to various dealerships around the Philippines. We will update you as soon as more information about this issue becomes available.
