This is your first look at next-generation BMW iX3

We've already seen BMW reveal the all-new X3 earlier this year. Featuring a sleeker and smoother exterior design, the fourth generation crossover SUV gets a more dynamic look along with a more high-tech cabin. At the time of its launch, the X3 was only offered with a plethora of electrified turbo-gas engines and a turbo-diesel motor.

But where's the next-generation all-electric iX3? Well, BMW has been busy of late producing a prototype of the all-new iX3. In fact, the automaker has started near-series production of the Neue Klasse X concept from which the all-new iX3 will be based at the company's Debrecen plant in Hungary. This marks the beginning of the final preparation phase for the eventual start of series production which will take place in late 2025.

“The production of the first test vehicles in Debrecen is an important milestone in commissioning the new plant. With vehicles now approaching series maturity, all logistics and production processes at the plant are being tested and constantly optimized under real conditions to ensure a smooth start of series production,” said Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production.

The company released a teaser image of the near-series production of the Neue Klasse crossover SUV albeit wearing a camouflage livery. Despite BMW's best efforts to hide its appearance, we can see that the vehicle's design remains faithful to the original Neue Klasse X concept. From the distinct LED headlights to the stylish front fascia, as well as the unique roofline, BMW tried to keep most of the concept's styling elements for the production version.

However, BMW did have to make some changes to make the concept a reality by giving it conventional side mirrors, a broader front bumper, and what appear to be smaller wheels which is a stark difference from the concept's massive alloys.

Neue Klasse X concept

As for the production of the near-series prototypes, the logistics processes, manufacturing equipment and operations performed by employees at the plant have already been tested to function smoothly. This also includes test vehicles that underwent all production steps. For BMW, these operations are just as complex as in actual series production.

To ensure production processes are tested before series production of the all-new vehicle begins, materials and vehicle parts are delivered daily to Plant Debrecen – with test vehicles coming off the production line continuously. Every part and every production step is closely scrutinized, and special attention is paid to the validation of cutting-edge production systems & tools, including their digital connectivity.

We might still be a long way from seeing the all-new iX3 but boy are we impressed with the fact that BMW is already conducting tests before the full production begins. Here's to hoping we see the next-generation iX3 make its debut soon.
