This is the new Peugeot 408...for China
Peugeot unveiled the 408 for the Chinese market, could they also release it here?

Earlier this month, Peugeot released a teaser photo of the 408. The initial details released by the French automaker mentioned that it will have the combined looks of both a sedan and crossover. It's set to be revealed by the end of June and will be a global model. Imagine to our surprise when we found out that they actually unveiled a 408 in China, the 408 sedan to be exact.
This is the 2022 Peugeot 408 for the People's Republic, and it's wearing a familiar face. Now donning the 308's design, the Dongfeng-built Peugeot 408 wants a piece of the market where the models like the Toyota Corolla / Levin, VW Lavida / Lamando, and the Ford Focus sedan are doing battle with other local brands.

Dimensions haven’t changed as much, it still has a length of 4750 mm and a wheelbase of 2730 mm. The changes are mainly pronounced in the front fascia of the car. The very noticeable DRL fangs and larger grille stand out. The faux intakes on the front bumper coupled with the new Lion badge give the updated 408 a sportier look.
The rear also wasn’t spared when it comes to the sporty vibe. It has thinner LED light strips and a black garnish that reminds us of the larger 508. To complete the racy look, they integrated the spoiler. Last but not least, the sedan sits on the same five-spoke alloy wheels as the previous model.

For power, the 408 has a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 167 PS and 250 Nm of torque. Power is then sent to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission that drives the front wheels. So far, there is no news of a hybrid or fully electric version yet.

Peugeot also improved the iCockpit for the 408. The signature small-diameter steering wheel is still there. Aluminum trim can be found in the dashboard and around the cabin. The 12-inch digital gauge cluster has been moved higher for a better view. The aircraft-style switches that control the climate and other functions are still there under the 10-inch infotainment touch screen.

Peugeot-Dongfeng is already taking pre-orders on its official website. Prices are expected to remain the same as the previous 408 and start at ¥ 119,700 or PHP 947,271. With the release of the 2008 locally and the all-new 3008 on the horizon, the French sedan looks also poised to do battle in our local market should Peugeot decide to bring it in.
