SEMA 2022: CJ Surge Concept is an all-electric Jeep for the future
Jeep CJ Surge Concept blends old-school looks with high-tech 4x4 EV capability

Jeep arrived at this year's SEMA Show with an electrifying concept. This is the CJ Surge Concept, and while it may look like just a dressed-up CJ, it hides a high-tech secret under the hood.
Don't expect to find a turbocharged six-cylinder or a HEMI V8 powering this particular Jeep. The Surge Concept is a fully-electric vehicle that highlights the benefits of having an EV powertrain on classic Jeep models.

The driving force of the Surge Concept is a scalable 400-volt, 200kW Electric Drive Module mounted to the frame with custom-designed solid motor mounts. Power to all four wheels is supplied by 24 lithium-ion battery modules while torque runs through a two-speed Jeep transfer case with selectable gearing. The result is a system output of 272 PS with instantaneous torque at the ready.

Complementing the electric powertrain is a 4x4 setup that consists of 35-inch BF Goodrich all-terrain tires and a 2-inch lift kit for better ground clearance. Just like the Wrangler, Jeep installed Dana 44 axles to help it easily crawl over boulders and uneven terrain. It also has matte black 18-inch Black Rhino Solid wheels complete with blue accents on the rim beads for an extra flashy look.

Other unique features on the Surge Concept include; Copper Canyon exterior paint with gloss black and Surf Orange graphics, bodyside striping, the signature Jeep seven-slot grille, and a custom-built roll cage. It also gets Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) like a Rubicon Wrangler bumper kit, Rubicon skid and front-bumper plates, and a JPP Rubicon Warn winch.

With the CJ Surge Concept essentially showing Jeep owners they can convert classic 4x4s into EVs, perhaps it might attract those who want to keep their old-school Jeeps without having to deal with emissions laws or heavy maintenance of older engines. More importantly, it also showed Jeeps' commitment to making the switch to EVs while still delivering 4x4 capability in its vehicles.
Do you think the CJ Surge Concept is a technical marvel in the 4x4 scene or is it a sacrilege against the classic Jeep CJ? Let us know in the comments.
