Report: Audi Q2 dead after only one generation

It appears the future of the Audi Q2 is looking bleak despite being only launched last 2016 during the Geneva International Motor Show. With the automaker focusing on larger and more premium segments (as well as electrification plans), Audi has reportedly decided to discontinue the Q2 and the A1 hatchback.

According to a report by German publication Handelsblatt, Audi CEO Markus Duesmann shared that they will no longer build a new-generation A1. As a result, the Q2 will also be axed since both the hatchback and crossover are based on the MQB platform derived from Volkswagen.

“We have decided not to build the A1 anymore, and there will be no successor model from the Q2 either. We have also realigned Audi as a premium brand. We will limit our model range at the bottom and expand it at the top,” said Duesmann.

With the Q2 and A1 heading for the chopping block, the A3 and Q3 will now serve as the brand’s smallest offerings. The decision to not build any more A1 and Q2 lines in the future will allow Audi to redirect its focus (and resources) to e-tron models, as well as larger vehicles.

Audi’s decision to go upmarket and make bigger vehicles could be in line with the same strategy as its closest rivals - BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Both automakers don’t offer models below the compact segment. Instead, they are focused on making EVs, as well as larger electrified models.
