Report: 2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI could be available as a hybrid
Next-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI to get new hybrid tech with improved power, economy and emissions

The next-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI will apparently be equipped with a new mild hybrid powertain, report says. The hybrid tech also comes with enhanced power, economy and emissions.
According to the report, the Golf GTI will feature an advanced 48V electrical system (may have been borrowed from Audi), along with an integrated starter motor. It will also be fitted with an electrically-operated turbocharger for the 2.0-liter TSI engine. With these, the target power output should be similar to the 265 PS of the Golf GTI Clubsport. A manual gearbox may not be offered as it will only be connected to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission.
The 2020 Volkswagen Golf will also reportedly feature an upgraded MQB modular platform, which is expected to debut on the new Audi A3, according to insiders. They also revealed that the structure will be 50kg lighter than the current platform.
The new Golf Mk8 is expected to arrive in the U.K showrooms by the fourth quarter of 2019, while the GTI variant is expected to follow in 2020.
