Refreshed 2024 BMW X5 M, X6 M revealed with electrified V8s

Earlier this month, BMW revealed the 2024 X5/X6 with mild exterior and interior updates to keep it fresh and up-to-date. More importantly, however, both the X5 and X6 now run on either mild-hybrid (MHEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains across the board. This allowed both vehicles to deliver faster acceleration while producing fewer emissions, as well as provide sheer driving pleasure.

But what about its more powerful M versions? Well, just a few weeks after launching the regular models, BMW has officially revealed the 2024 X5 and X6 M. Just like its regular counterparts, the M vehicles are now electrified.

Starting with the hardware upgrades, the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 found in both crossovers now comes with a 48V mild-hybrid system. It has an electric motor that's integrated into the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission which BMW claims delivers faster gear changes and shorter gearing. Meanwhile, the engine gets upgraded internals which includes a reinforced crankshaft, updated turbos, a cross-bank exhaust manifold, and a new intake duct. As a result, the V8 designation has been changed from S63 to S68.

Despite the upgrades and 48V mild-hybrid system, BMW says the V8 continues to make 625 PS and 750 Nm of torque which is similar to what its predecessors produce. However, the new electrified system helps lower emissions, while also delivering sharper response and better fuel efficiency.

Complementing the upgraded V8 is a long list of M-exclusive features. These include; the M xDrive all-wheel drive system, Active M Differential, M Sport exhaust, M Compound Brakes, and the Adaptive M Suspension Professional.

In terms of styling, both the X6 and X5 M get a fiercer look thanks to slimmer LED headlights, X-shaped LED taillights, a restyled kidney grille that appears to have been inspired by the XM, new quad exhaust pipes, massive 21-inch wheels at the front and 22-inches at the back, and a black rear diffuser that further give the X5/X6 M their more aggressive design.

Inside, occupants will immediately notice the new BMW Curved Display which is slowly becoming a standard feature across the entire range. It consists of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an even bigger 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system that runs on the BMW Operating System 8. Other neat additions inside the updated X5/X6 M include new LED ambient lighting on the dashboard, carbon fiber paddle shifters, Merino leather upholstery, a Harman Kardon sound system, and a panoramic moonroof.

Production of the 2024 BMW X5 and X6 M is set to begin this coming April at the company's Spartanburg factory in the US. With that, we can expect the North American and European markets to get their hands on the electrified high-performance crossovers soon. As for its Philippine debut, it could make its way here before the year ends or sometime in 2024.
