Potential engine stall: Hyundai Kona, Venue, Elantra recalled

It looks like Hyundai may need to check the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) assemblies of their vehicles across several markets. This comes after the automaker recently announced a recall of several examples of the Elantra, Kona, and Venue from the 2024 model year.

According to Hyundai, 13,511 vehicles in the United States are being recalled due to a faulty EGR valve sensor. The defective sensor manages the vehicle's EGR valve assembly and could have been contaminated with flux by the brand's supplier, BorgWarner.

Affected vehicles that come with the said issue may experience an electric short circuit within the EGR valve assembly. Should this happen, the EGR valve will malfunction which could result in the engine stalling – resulting in a loss of power. This will leave affected customers stuck on the road and perhaps be involved in an accident.

So far, Hyundai said that 14 incidents have been attributed to this issue in the US. However, there have been no reports yet of accidents or fatalities as a result of the said faulty EGR sensor. In total, 7,349 Elantras, 3,798 Konas, and 2,364 Venues are part of the recall in the US. The automaker has also announced that they will start contacting affected owners and replacing the EGR valve assembly free of charge via authorized dealers.

Hyundai has yet to announce if other vehicles (and markets) are affected by the said recall, including the Philippines. But given that most cars nowadays share components, perhaps there will be recalls in the not-so-distant future due to the EGR valve assembly issue.
