Porsche boss confirms new flagship electric SUV

When Porsche first released the Cayenne back in 2002, purists were up in arms over the Stuttgart-based brand's focus on an SUV instead of just sportscars like the 911 and the Boxster. Their gamble paid off as the Cayenne became one of its cash cows with the market shifting towards crossovers and SUVs. It even resulted in Porsche building a smaller crossover called the Macan.

Then in 2019, Porsche stunned the motoring world when they unleashed the all-electric Taycan. Capable of producing 750 PS in its most powerful form, Porsche proved that they can make more powerful vehicles aside from the 911, Boxster, and the Cayman. The following year, Porsche distributor PGA Cars Inc officially made the Taycan available to the Philippine market.

With the automaker erasing all doubt that they can make SUVs and EVs (not just sportscars), it seems Porsche is about to combine the very best of both in a flagship model. During the brand's capital markets day in Weissach, Germany, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume announced the plan to build a new luxury electric SUV.

“We plan to add a new luxury, all-electric SUV model to our attractive portfolio, which will roll off the production line in Leipzig. This will further expand our position in the luxury automotive segment. We are targeting the higher margin segments in particular and aim to tap into new sales opportunities in this way,” said Blume.

Other details regarding the luxury flagship electric SUV were not revealed. However, Blume did mention that the upcoming EV will have “a very sporty interpretation of an SUV” which could mean it will have a sporty silhouette. In addition, the upcoming electric model will supposedly be built at the company's Leipzig factory.

With the Macan set to become a fully-electric SUV along with the next-generation 718 models, Porsche is sticking to the plan of having an 80% EV and hybrid variant by 2030. 

No exact timeline was revealed as to when Porsche will actually launch or reveal the flagship EV SUV, so it might be a while before the automaker actually releases a teaser image or initial details about the all-new SUV. What we do know is that it could be bigger and more luxurious than the already opulent Cayenne.
