No More Paper: LTO gets fresh supply of 4 million cards

The Land Transportation Office on Saturday announced that the millions in driver’s license (DL) backlog is finally resolved after the agency was able to acquire an additional 4 million plastic cards.

“So we would like to announce to our clients, to the Filipino people, no more paper licenses! We’re back to plastic card licenses!” said LTO chief, Atty. Vigor Mendoza II.

According to LTO, this development came as the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) has elevated to the Court of Appeals (CA) the injunction order issued by a Quezon City Regional Trial Court in connection with the delivery of the remaining 3.3 million plastic cards that were procured early this year.

“The delivery of these 4 million plastic cards is enough to address both the backlog and the daily usage through application and renewal of driver’s license,” added Mendoza.

More than enough supply

LTO says that if the CA would rule in favor of the OSG petition, that would mean an additional 3.3 million plastic cards on top of the 4 million plastic cards that are expected to be delivered next month.

“This 4 million plastic cards is LTO’s early Christmas gift to motorists that patiently waited for their [plastic] licenses. Hopefully, the 3.3 million plastic cards – whose delivery was postponed by the injunction – would then serve as LTO’s Valentine’s Day gift to motorists,” said Mendoza.

4 million plastic cards ‘donated’

According to LTO, the 4 million plastic cards were donated by the group Philippine Society of Medicine for Drivers (PSMed) under the leadership of its president, Dr. Albert Alegre. 

The Deed of Donation was signed today, at LTO’s head office in Quezon City.
