No Gas, No Diesel: Jaguar will say goodbye to internal combustion

Sweeping changes are happening at Jaguar. In four years, we will be saying goodbye to the brand's famous engines – from the V8 in the F-Type to the new Ingenium turbocharged inline-6 powering its sedans. That's because by 2025, Jaguar will transform into an all-electric luxury brand producing only electric vehicles. Yes, not hybrid or electric-assisted, but pure battery-powered EV models only. Subsequently, this move kills off every internal combustion engine they have.

The shift to become an EV-only brand is part of Jaguar's Reimagine strategy. The plan is to produce only electric vehicles by 2025 to achieve their end goal of becoming a net-zero carbon business by 2039. They're quite serious about their shift to building EVs too. Jaguar Land Rover plans to invest GBP 2.5 billion in electrification technologies and the development of new platforms for upcoming EV models. These platforms will also be exclusive to the Jaguar and not shared with Land Rover.

“As a human-centered company, we can, and will, move much faster and with clear purpose of not just reimagining modern luxury but defining it for two distinct brands. Brands that present emotionally unique designs, pieces of art if you like, but all with connected technologies and responsible materials that collectively set new standards in ownership. We are reimagining a new modern luxury by design,” said Thierry Bolloré, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover.

Despite simplifying the Jaguar range with a new platform and going all-electric, the automaker won't be closing down its factories. Instead, Jaguar plans to retool its assembly plants in the UK and around the world.

It's also uncertain whether the XE, XF, and F-Type will be retained, albeit with an EV powertrain. At the moment, the brand's only EV is the I-Pace crossover. Jaguar also confirmed the discontinuation of the XJ flagship sedan. In its official press release, the Jaguar XJ replacement will not “form part of the line-up, as the brand looks to realize its unique potential”.

With only four years to go before 2025, Jaguar sure has its hands full by shifting to EVs. For fans of the brand, well, this might be your last chance to buy a Jaguar powered by an internal-combustion.
